Fraunhofer IIS and Spin Digital Showcase Next-generation Live Streaming and Broadcasting using VVC and MPEG-H Audio

Berlin, Erlangen, Tokyo, November 14th 2023 – Spin Digital Video Technologies GmbH (Spin Digital) and the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS (Fraunhofer IIS) announced that they will showcase a complete solution for next-generation live broadcasting and streaming based on VVC and MPEG-H Audio at the InterBEE 2023 trade-show in Japan.

An onsite demonstration will be presented from November 15 to 17 at the Fraunhofer IIS Booth in Hall 1 – Booth 1612, at the Makuhari Messe in Tokyo.

Fraunhofer IIS and Spin Digital collaboration

Fraunhofer IIS and Spin Digital have been collaborating on integrating MPEG-H Audio for live encoding and streaming workflows. Spin Digital’s live encoder, Spin Enc Live, has been enhanced with the latest version of the MPEG-H Audio encoder, including support for immersive audio with up to 22.2 channels as well as audio objects for personalized and interactive experiences.

Spin Digital has released a new version of Spin Enc Live (v2.1) with support of UHD (4K and 8K) VVC live encoding combined with MPEG-H Audio. The VVC encoder includes quality, compression, and performance improvements using advanced features such as motion temporal filter, screen content coding, perceptually optimized encoding, content-aware encoding, and live adaptive bitrate streaming. All these features are enabled while running in real time for 4K and 8K video with 60-fps and 10-bit HDR.

Spin Digital also presents a new version of its professional Media Player, Spin Player, optimized for low-latency streaming and rendering, with an enhanced VVC decoder and improved support for MPEG-H Audio.

Demonstration at InterBEE 2023

At InterBEE 20223 Fraunhofer IIS and Spin Digital will demonstrate a complete workflow for live encoding, streaming and playback of MPEG-H Audio and VVC. Spin Enc Live will be used for real-time VVC encoding using adaptive bitrate streaming with UHD (4K) and FullHD (1080p) outputs. Streaming will be performed using SRT and DASH protocols, and playback will be performed using the Spin Player as well as a mobile-based media player highlighting the flexibility and device adaptability of VVC and MPEG-H Audio.

The complete system is ready for 8K live VVC with adaptive bitrate streaming and MPEG-H Audio with level 4 (22.2 channels plus objects) for the most demanding broadcasting and live streaming applications.

VVC and MPEG-H Audio: Ready for next-generation streaming and broadcasting

VVC and MPEG-H Audio are being selected by broadcasters and standardization organizations as the basis for next-generation broadcasting systems. In addition to being chosen for the upcoming next-generation television system in Brazil, known as TV 3.0, they are being considered for the next broadcasting standard in Japan, which is developed by the Japanese broadcast standards organization ARIB (Association of Radio Industries and Businesses).

Together VVC video and MPEG-H Audio provide the best audiovisual quality for next-generation and immersive media services such as UHD-TV broadcasting, 4K/8K video streaming, and live immersive and Virtual Reality applications.
