Post-production and Professional Media

Features and Trends

Modern post-production workflows need to handle two significant requirements: i) to import content coming from many sources including different file formats, codecs, and cameras; and ii) to export video formats in very high quality for the next generation of media applications including Ultra HD (4K and 8K) resolution, High Frame Rate (HFR), high bit depth, etc.

The HEVC video coding standard, in particular, its Fidelity Range Extensions, fulfills all the requirements for professional media with sufficient compression. It supports features such as:

  • Professional chroma formats: 4:2:2, 4:4:4, RGB
  • High bit depth: 10- and 12-bit
  • Intra-only and random-access compression
  • Transfer function and color gamut metadata

Although not as an intermediate codec for editing, HEVC is very well suited for exporting very high quality files at moderate bit rates.
