PoQuMo8K addresses the development of a technical solution for the user-centric quality evaluation and encoding optimization of the novel video format 8K UHD-2. This format enables a stronger sensation of reality and a much higher level of immersion than before. When used in live applications, it enables a highly immersive view of events such as concerts, sports, and lectures. Encoding and streaming of 8K content in high quality and in real-time is challenging and requires cutting-edge video compression technologies. Even more than for lower resolutions, encoder developers and service providers have to ensure that the delivered video results in high visual quality for viewers. Therefore, a solution for quality evaluation of 8K media that reflects human visual perception is needed.
PoQuMo8K addresses this need by proposing a video quality algorithm for an automated, real-time perception-based quality evaluation for live-service monitoring, as well as part of the encoding for 8K video in live application scenarios.

Funded by ZIM – BMWK: “ZIM” stands for “Zentrales Innovationsprogramm Mittelstand”, which means “Central Innovation Programme for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)”. It is a funding programme of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action that aims to foster the innovative capacity of SMEs. https://www.zim.de/ZIM/Navigation/DE/Meta/Englisch/englisch.html
Immersify will develop key tools for allowing the next generation of immersive media applications including: video compression technology tailored for the needs of the VR video; advanced media players for immersive displays including large screen and Head-Mounted Displays (HMDs); and tools to allow content creators to produce highly personalized content with seamless interactivity.
Immersify puts together European leaders in immersive media technologies and content: Spin Digital is a leader in the market of the video codecs for ultra-high quality applications. Ars Electronica (AE) organizes the Ars Electronica Festival, the world’s most important media art festival; Marché du Film (MDF) organizes the Cannes Film Festival and the Marché du Film, the largest Film Festival and Film Market in the world. The Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Center (PSNC) has a world unique media production lab for immersive content. Norrköping Visualisering AB (NVAB) has many years of experience with the production and exhibition of 360 video.
The DDD60 project seeks to improve the compression technology for making the distribution of VR content more accessible, less costly, and for delivering a higher quality viewing experience. The consortium consists of European film and technology organisations – reelport, Spin Digital, Sunny Side of the Doc, the Marché du Film – Festival de Cannes, Tampere Film Festival, and Sheffield Doc/Fest – that have come together to collaborate on enhancing the end-users’ virtual reality online experience.
Spin Digital is the project technical coordinator and is also developing a video transcoding system based on HEVC/H.265 for coding of 360° video, as well as a high quality media player for the next generation of VR devices.
Low-Power Parallel Computing on GPUs 2 (LPGPU2) is a EU-funded research project into low powered graphics devices. The project aims to deliver advances in tools and applications for energy efficient use of mobile GPUs.
In LPGPU2, Spin Digital will optimize its HEVC/H.265 codec further to achieve even higher performance and lower power, specially for mobile devices. New graphics APIs such as DirectX12 and Vulkan will be integrated into Spin Digital software for enabling the performance and power efficiency required by emerging media applications.
