Spin Digital Releases Spin SDK v7.0 with Improved HEVC and VVC Live Encoding

Berlin, January 13th 2025: At Spin Digital we are proud to announce the release of a new version of our video codec SDK: Spin SDK v7.0.

Spin SDK includes highly optimized HEVC and VVC video encoders and decoders as well as libraries for video and audio rendering, processing and streaming.

These components can be easily connected to each other using an optimized media framework. Spin SDK codecs and processing modules have been extensively optimized in order to achieve the maximum possible performance and quality.

The new version 7.0 is a major release that includes improvements to the HEVC and VVC encoders for higher performance, better perceptual quality and several new features and fixes.

Summary of New Features

Below we present a summary of the main improvements and changes:

1. Improved HEVC and VVC Encoders

The HEVC and VVC encoders have been improved with higher compression efficiency, higher performance, support for latest generation of CPU architectures., better perceptually encoding mode, among other improvements:

  • Improved compression efficiency: compared to the previous version, the newly released encoders achieve an average bitrate reduction of 3-5% with the same computing requirements, and in some individual videos the bitrate reductions are more than 20%.
  • Runtime rate control reconfiguration: Add a new API to allow for runtime bitrate and quality changes.
  • Real-time performance boost: A feature to dynamically boost performance for real-time operation
  • Improved rate control and perceptual coding:  enhanced CBR rate control performance, added window-based rate control for VBR and PQP/CAE modes for chunk-based delivery, and improved perceptually-optimized encoding algorithm.
  • Improved low latency configurations: Improve CBR with low number of lookahead frames and lower minimum HRD buffer.

2. Statmux

Spin DK v.7.0 includes a new and modern design for statistical multiplexing (statmux). The statmux allows a more efficient delivery of multiple live streams under global constraints. The new statmux is based on our perceptual coding and content-aware encoding algorithms, and dynamically allocates bandwidth based on the complexity of each video stream. It supports HEVC and VVC, and can combine dynamically streams with different properties (e.g. resolution, frame rates, etc)

3. ST 2110 support

The SDK modules for input capture and output rendering have been extended with support for the ST 2110 standard for IP-based workflows. It provides  a flexible and efficient alternative to traditional SDI workflows. Spin Digital implementation, based on high-end ST-2110 network adapters, can reach the performance required for the most demanding applications including 8K up 120 frames per second (with 4:2:2 and 10-bit pixel format) with more than 200 audio channels.

4. Platform support

In addition to the existing and highly optimized implementations for x86_64 architecture for Windows and Linux, the SDK v.70 includes:

  • Preliminary support for macOS 14 Sonoma (ARM64 and x86-64).
  • Preliminary support for Windows 11 ARM64 and Linux ARM64
