Spin Digital Teams up with Intel to Present 8K VVC Live Streaming at NAB 2023 Futures Park

Las Vegas, April 16, 2023 – Spin Digital, in collaboration with Intel Corporation and with the support of the 8K Association, announced today that they will present the latest advances in 8K VVC/H.266 live streaming at the NAB 2023 tradeshow in Las Vegas.

An onsite demonstration of 8K VVC encoding and playback will be presented from April 16 to 19 at the 8K Association booth (W4015 in the West Hall) at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

8K VVC Live: Ready for the Next-generation 8K Streaming

8K live streaming at broadcast-grade quality and low bitrate requires the combination of the latest and most advanced video coding technologies including: VVC/H.266, Content Aware Encoding (CAE), Perceptually Optimized Encoding (POE), and optimized encoding algorithms for live operation. All these features put together will enable the ultimate live 8K visual experience to be streamed over the Internet”, Mauricio Alvarez Mesa, CEO, Spin Digital Video Technologies GmbH

  • Versatile Video Coding – VVC/H.266: The newest video codec designed to significantly reduce the bitrate over HEVC, as well as facilitate next-generation video applications such as 8K live streaming.
  • Content Aware Encoding: An encoding technique that aims at using only the necessary bits to achieve the broadcast-grade visual quality according to the video complexity.
  • Perceptually Optimized Encoding: A quality optimization mode that relies on a model of the human visual system to minimize the perceptibility of compression errors.
  • 8K real-time encoding: A CPU-based software implementation of the VVC standard optimized for Intel Xeon processors, allowing 8K 10-bit HDR live encoding.

8K VVC Media Playback – Software player on a compact PC

A low-latency live VVC media player will also be presented. It is based on Spin Digital Media Player (Spin Player), which incorporates a highly optimized CPU-based VVC decoder and a high-performance GPU-based video rendering engine.

The media player runs on a compact PC based on the Intel NUC 13 Extreme Platform, which includes an Intel Core i9-13900K CPU and an Intel ARC A770 GPU, that can be connected directly to the 8K TV using an HDMI 2.1 interface to help enable a full 8K 60 fps 10 bit HDR experience” commented Ravindra Velhal, Director, Global Content Technology, Intel Corporation.
