Spin Digital at IBC 2015 – Amsterdam

At IBC 2015 Spin Digital will present an 8K video decoder ready for the next generation of Ultra High Definition applications that require High Dynamic Range, High Frame Rates, and Wide Colour Gamuts. Spin Digital will demonstrate its decoder supporting 8K at 60 frames per second with 4:4:4 color format and 10 bit using a single workstation.

Berlin, August 3, 2015 — Spin Digital, provider of ultra high performance video codecs, announced today that it will demonstrate an 8K HEVC/H.265 video decoding system that supports 8K at 60 frames per second with 4:4:4 color format and 10 bit at the IBC 2015 exhibition. The demonstration will take place from September 11-15 at the Amsterdam RAI at Hall 1 Stand 1.F13.

8K – Ultra High Definition 2 (UHD-2)

8K (aka UHD-2 or Super Hi Vision), with a 4 times higher resolution than 4K UHD, is the ultimate format for high quality video. Promoters and critics alike have widely recognized the advantages of 4K UHD over FHD, as 4K truly brings a new video experience. 8K will go far beyond 4K by delivering immersive and absorbing experiences that are currently not possible with 4K. Beyond increases in resolution, 8K (and also the so-called UHD-1 phase-2) will bring significant image quality improvements such as High Dynamic Range (HDR), High Frame Rates (HFR), and Wide Colour Gamuts (WCG). Envisioned applications are immersive video for public events and the living room, and the next generation of virtual reality devices.

Spin Digital HEVC/H.265 8K Decoder

A critical component for making 8K a reality is the video codec. The codec must provide the highest compression, and at the same time be able to process the 8K data rates. Spin Digital has solved this by creating the most optimized HEVC/H.265 decoder implementation, the only one in the market able to provide high-quality 8K in real-time.

The demonstration at IBC will show a real-time decoder for 8K supporting 60 frames per second, and high quality color formats (4:4:4 and 10-bit), using a single workstation PC platform. The decoder fully supports HEVC/H.265 version 2 standard (also known as the Range Extensions), enabling not only low bitrate 8K and, but at the same time cinema-grade colour fidelity.

The main features of Spin Digital decoder are:

  • Real-time decoding of 8Kp60 4:4:4 10-bit content with more than 100 Mbit/s
  • Support for RExt profiles: 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 (and also RGB) with up to 12 bits
  • Highly-scalable and advanced multithreaded architecture
  • Extensively optimized for Intel and ARM processors
  • Optimized for minimal memory bandwidth with efficient pixel representations
  • Custom high-performance GPU rendering system based on OpenGL
  • 600% higher video processing rate than competition

The Spin Digital 8K HEVC/H.265 decoder is demonstrated on four 58-inch 4K/UHD TVs in a 2×2 setup, resulting in an 8K UHD surface just short of 120 inches.

Availability

Spin Digital HEVC/H.265 decoder is available for licensing as a C/C++ SDK for Windows, and Linux, for 32- and 64-bit. Spin Digital also offers a HEVC/H.265 encoder that supports 8K encoding with 4:4:4 and up to 12 bit formats.
