Spin Digital joining the 8K Association at the CEDIA Show in Denver

Berlin, September 3rd 2025,  we are pleased to announce our participation in the CEDIA Expo 2025. The Expo will be held from September 4 to 6 at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver.

Spin Digital is joining the 8K Association in a demonstration of the entire 8K technology ecosystem – from content creation and production to distribution, integration and viewing in the home.

As a leading provider of high-performance video codecs, Spin Digital will be showcasing the latest advancements in video coding for 8K content delivery.

Visit us at the 8K Association’s 8K Pavilion is located in booth #4501.

At CEDIA 2025 we are presenting the latest version of our VVC encoder with optimizations for perceptual coding and content-aware encoding (CAE), as well as our optimized VVC decoder for 8K.

Perceptual coding and content-aware encoding (CAE)

The goal of content-aware encoding is not just to reduce file size but to do so without negatively impacting the viewer’s experience. It prioritizes allocating bits to the parts of the video where they will have the most significant impact on perceived quality.

Spin Digital’s CAE implementation is based on two related techniques:

  • Perceptual optimization: using a model of the human visual system it guides bitrate allocation in order to minimize and balance perceptual errors within individual frames
  • PQP mode: modulates the encoding (quantization) over frames with the objective of maintaining a constant perceived quality as possible.

With the combination of these two techniques it is possible to reduce the bitrate significantly compared to constant bitrate or traditional fixed ladders, and at the same time maintain a high perceived quality.

8K VVC Content-aware Encoding Demo

For the CEDIA show we have encoded multiple sequences from various 8K content creators using the VVC encoder with the PQP mode and perceptual optimization enabled. A constant quality setting was defined with a maximum bitrate of 60 Mbps. The results show around 60% bitrate savings, as the average bitrate is 25 Mbps, while preserving the 8K quality.

The main advantages of CAE for 8K content distribution are smaller files which translates directly into lower storage costs and reduced content delivery network (CDN) bandwidth charges, which are often major expenses for streaming services. At the same time, viewers benefit from a more consistent and higher-quality viewing experience, and for users with limited bandwidth, CAE can deliver nativer 8K resolution at a lower bitrate than traditional CBR or fixed ladders.

Spin Digital’s CAE (PQP + perceptual mode) can be applied both for Video-on-Demand services with offline encoding and live streaming where there is less time and resources available for encoding. In practice, Spin Digital’s offers a single pass CAE both for live and VoD applications, simplifying encoding processes and reducing encoding time and cost.

Highly optimized VVC decoder and player

Spin Digital’s ultra-optimized VVC decoder and media player (Spin Player) will be used for the demonstration. Running on a compact PC using software decoding or on a laptop with hardware-accelerated decoder, it demonstrates the ability to playback 8K VVC content on compact and low-power devices.

Panel session

The 8K Association Executive Director, Juan Reyes, will be facilitating an insightful panel discussion with industry leaders across the 8K ecosystem.

On September 5th, our CEO Chi Ching Chi will join the panel with experts from AMD, The Explorers and 4by4, about 8K content production and delivery

All the sessions happening at the 8K Pavillion: Booth #4501.
