Spin Digital at Mile High Video 2026
Spin Digital is joining Mile High Video in Denver for the first time with a presentation and a demo.
Spin Digital’s COO Mauricio Alvarez-Mesa will have a presentation titled:
Ultra-low latency software (HEVC and VVC) encoding: capabilities and applications
The details of the session are:
- Date and time: February 2nd, Day 2, 9:00 – 11:15 am
- Session: Video Coding 1: Practical Encoding Systems, Real-World Deployments, AI for Compression
- Place: The Cable center, Denver, Colorado
Mauricio will discuss how ultra-low latency software encoders can make a significant difference for applications such as real-time communication, cloud gaming, remote desktop, broadcast contribution and remote monitoring and control.
In the presentation Mauricio will discuss the tradeoffs between latency, visual quality, and performance when designing an ultra low latency encoder, as well as the pros and cons of software (CPU) vs hardware (GPU / ASIC) implementations of ultra low latency encoders including encoding complexity, quality for high and low bitrates, and computing and power requirements.
The presentation centers around the design of a modern software encoder for ultra low latency with support for 1 frame latency, Gradual Decoding refresh (GDR), CBR rate control with small HRD buffer, optimized implementation of HEVC and VVC, and a complete framework for low latency.
Among these factors, special attention will be paid to the quality benefits of GDR for low latency at low bitrates and the advantages of the support for GDR in VVC.
The presentation will include a comparison of resulting latency for high efficiency and ultra low latency configurations for 4Kp60 video.
On-site demo
In addition to the presentation, Spin Digital is also presenting an on-site demo, with ultra-low latency VVC encoding running on a laptop and compared to a hardware encoder.
