Spin Digital Video Technologies GmbH (Spin Digital) develops high-performance video codecs for the next generation of ultra-high-quality video applications.

Spin Digital software solutions enable media applications that require the latest image and video processing enhancements including very high resolution (4K, 8K, and 16K), high dynamic range, high frame rate, wide color gamut, and 360° video and virtual reality.

Spin Digital core technology is a high-performance and high-quality HEVC/H.265 software codec (encoder/decoder). Based on this core technology Spin Digital has developed a solution that includes a media player, a transcoder, as well as an SDK ready to be integrated into custom applications.

Mauricio Alvarez-Mesa


Dr. Mauricio Alvarez-Mesa is responsible for the general strategy of the company, business development, and R&D projects. He has more than 10 years of research experience in the field of optimization of video codecs. He has worked as a researcher for several international institutions such as the Polytechnic University of Catalonia in Barcelona, IBM Haifa, Fraunhofer Institute HHI in Berlin and Technical University of Berlin. He has been part of several international research projects as well as co-authored more than 20 publications, and a book in the field of parallel computing for video coding.

Mauricio holds a PhD degree in Computer Engineering from Polytechnic University of Catalonia. He is fluent in English, Spanish and Catalan.

Alexander Papachristos


Alexander Papachristos is responsible for finance, operations and investor relations. He has been a visiting professor teaching finance & management courses in universities in Beijing. He has advised various startups in China and lectured in European universities on the Chinese economy. He started his career as an accountant for Bayer in Barcelona and had stints in Private Equity, M&A and Asset Management in Dubai, Berlin and Doha respectively.

Alexander holds an MBA in Finance from Peking University Guanghua School of Management. He is fluent in English, German, Spanish and Greek.

Chi Ching Chi


Chi Ching Chi has pioneered the video codec technology at the Technical University of Berlin which later turned into the core technology of the company’s products. As a researcher he published numerous articles on H.264 and HEVC codec implementations, including in prestigious journals such as TCSVT. He was also part of the Fraunhofer HHI team that produced the first demonstration of 4K real-time HEVC decoding.

Chi Ching holds an MSc degree in Computer Engineering from Delft University of Technology. He is fluent in English and Dutch.

Sergio Sanz-Rodríguez

Senior Researcher

Dr. Sergio Sanz-Rodríguez is working on the development of the video codec technology and the management of R&D projects. He has been a teaching assistant at Carlos III University of Madrid and a researcher at the Technical University of Berlin. He has collaborated in R&D projects with the Fraunhofer Institute HHI in Berlin and visited the Nokia Research Centre in Tampere. He has worked as an engineer for several TV and cinema production companies in Madrid. He has more than 10 years of research experience in video coding and has published numerous articles in prestigious conferences and journals.

Sergio holds a PhD degree in Multimedia and Communications from Carlos III University of Madrid. He is fluent in English and Spanish.

Ben Juurlink

Scientific Advisor

Prof. Ben Juurlink is a professor of Embedded Systems Architectures of the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science faculty of the Technical University of Berlin. He is an internationally known researcher in the fields of multi- and manycore processors, media processors, low-power techniques, and memory systems. He has co-authored more than a 100 papers in international conferences and journals, and he has been the leader of several national projects, work-package leader and coordinator in several European projects. He worked as a post-doctoral research fellow at the Heinz Nixdorf Institute in Paderborn and was a faculty member in the Computer Engineering laboratory of Delft University of Technology

Prof. Juurlink holds a PhD degree from Leiden University. He is fluent in English, Dutch and German.

Haifeng Gao

Product Developer

Haifeng Gao is in charge of integrating video technologies into multimedia frameworks. He is an advanced OpenGL and DirectShow developer. He has been working on the topic of high performance video rendering for many years, and he is an experienced developer on Linux, Windows and Android platforms.

Haifeng holds an MSc degree in Computer Science from Technical University of Berlin. He is fluent in English and Mandarin Chinese.
